The Sun Will Soon Find Its Home in the Western Sky
Phasing and Ideas Series — Entry 22
--
The Phrasing and Ideas series is about elaborating on the thousand-plus entries I’ve collected in a document by the same name. These entries have been scavenged over several years through plenty of different situations and mediums. Every write-up visits one of the entries and gives it additional context, from where it was taken from, what it means to me, who I was when I found it, how it has grown with me over time, etc. For more information on the ‘Phasing and Ideas’ series, you can click here.
This phrase doesn’t have as much substance behind it relative to the other entries we’ve seen in this series so far. But it’s one that I find myself uttering periodically in my life, so I thought I might share.
I find this phrase while watching a college football game. It was LSU (Louisiana State University) versus somebody, and it was the marquee evening game for that respective week in college football, specifically in the South.
The phrase was heard as the broadcast came back from commercial break, and the broadcaster announced for the audience at home the sun will soon find its home in the western sky, and it will turn into nighttime in Death Valley. Death Valley is the nickname for LSU’s football stadium. It was an epic call, and given with a voice filled with equal parts anticipation, excitement, and wonder. The broadcaster would go on to paint the scenes of the atmosphere and environment around the stadium, and how every detail contributed to it being a ‘perfect night for college football’. From the cool airing of the autumn evening setting in, to the pastel skies above slowly fading away.
I love that call. And I love college football. I speculated on perhaps writing in detail my reverence for college football, from its pageantries to its chaoses. But I wanted to keep this one short, so I won’t, so I will.
And that’s all there is to it.
